Writing a blog is something like whispering into the wind. Or shouting into a storm. Now that blogs have proliferated into their millions and millions – a kind of white noise – it is something of a miracle when strangers find their way to this one.

Most of my blogs have been related to whatever work I have been engaged in at the time (with the exception of the last two, which were short expeditions into the natural world). And some of my most detailed and considered writing on this site has been in response to questions posted on the forum (the most recent being about reviews and money).

Most people routinely use pseudonyms to write in, whereas of course I am using my own name. Despite this imbalance a feeling of dialogue emerges. Perhaps a hidden identity allows people to say what they want to say and ask what they want to ask; anonymity brings its own freedoms. And whilst writing in my own name has an apparent transparency I am not using this blog as a diary; most of my life remains hidden from view.

Nevertheless I would like to greet you warmly if you are new to this site, and whisper a familiar hello to those of you who are returning visitors.

Hi there

last night i watched 'the man who cried"and once again i realized how all your films move me with their sensitivity and beautiful cinematography and I immediately tried to do some research on you and who you are and found this site which is great !!Being in a creative world has made me acutely aware of all the subtleties in your films, which stimulates all my senses -and i LOVE that !!!

Hello Sally, thank you for your words on this site. I come to them often mentally and spiritually exhausted from the pressures of the world - and find a kind of meditative quality - just like in your films. Refreshing, honest, beautiful and a much needed quiet reflection.

You may be interested to read a journal I contribute to - the Brighton Filmmakers Journal. We are a group of filmmakers here in Brighton, and have set up the journal - we have printed 300 copies and have distributed them around Brighton, and are working on issue 2. It is available as a PDF to view here: http://www.brightonfilmmakers.co.uk. My articles are on the documentary being made on the Justin Campaign (to kick out homophobia in football) and my own personal letter to Derek Jarman. If you enjoy reading the journal, I would love to hear your thoughts (and anyone else from this site.)

Thanks again Sally - keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing Rage!!

Your metaphors for writing a blog make me want to write a blog at the same time get away from writing one. You make movies I watch. While "The Tango Lesson" is a constant delight, "Yes" has always been on my mind. Mentioning of it at a lunch party last weekend started my search for you on the web. And writing to you today feels like I am actually reaching for the wind, and the storm.

Your response to my review question was a piece of art in it's own right. I did not even want to write a thank you so that your post there was more visible, but will do so here. The transparency you have generously opted for has been of immeasurable value to me, as I have no one to ask these things of. I am sure this is true for many others who stop by here. I too am happy to be transparent in the asking, in case I have not said before my name is Mary Haverstick (haverfilms is my sign in name).
You may be a stranger, but you should also know you have been my mentor as your advice has informed me at every crucial turn.
Wishing you the joy of new creation,
Mary

Hello!
I check in here regularly, and I'm always happy to read a new post.
I'm also excited to see there will be a Wallflower book about your work!
Transparently,
Sheri
