Part of the subject matter of RAGE is the ugly use of beauty in the pursuit of profit. Drugged by Marketing, sapped by fear of aging, conned by the cult of celebrity... image becomes all.
Jude Law, whose beauty has sometimes been held against him as an actor, made the courageous decision to accept the role of Minx - a “celebrity super-model” and took on a kind of hyper-beauty for this persona... a ‘female’ beauty which gradually unravels as the story unfolds.
Strangely, the more he became a ‘she’, coiffed and made-up - the more naked was his performance. There was great strength in his willingness to make himself vulnerable. It was an extraordinarily intense part of the shoot.

Beauty has always been the benchmark, though - hasn't it? From peacocks to paradise via the fairy stories, the princess unparalled, the handsome prince, not a frog but a greek god.......Phidias' statues - Canova et al - all described as beautiful, divine, alluring......seductive. Ugliness only mitigated by wit or disguise, la jolie laide only acceptable by sheer force of personality. If the cosmetics industry has become the Fourth Reich then who's to blame? Us. Amen. Immensense profits built on our tender insecurities. Quelles surpises. How odd to look at the stretched damaged faces of driven people who've submitted to the knife in pursuit of the elusive holy grail of youth.......what drives people to such lengths? Ourselves. No more, no less. WHY becomes less of a question than HOW, I think. Tattoos or facelifts - piercings, Botox, liposuction, starvation or gross over-indulgence. Tick whichever box applies. Only thing utterly forbidden is grey, ordinary, invisible. Mediocre. Tant pis for the many wisdoms our long years of learning have brought . Yet our demanding genes rarely allow for mistakes, though we try to overide them time and time again. The chemicals used in cosmetics from their very first deceptive conception have been so toxic and deadly - and probably still ARE - for those that care to read the labels - but we continue to coat our bodies and faces, sans cessation. Too bizarre. Rage an apt word for our era. Sigh.
Wondrous films, Sally - all of them. Bravo you. And for the energy/rage/passion that still burns brightly enough to explore new themes.

What a sensational way to intoduce a 'sensational' film. I am very ancious to see
this mainly because I have enjoyed your previous work particularly ORLANDO and
YES and know your standards are high This cast will niot fail you I'm sure as i have
nevet found Jude Law to fail to enchant and hold me spellbound not ony by those
amazing looks but on re-examination of his work on the subtle and believability of
his erforrmances i am therefore very anxious to seee this film and have been looking forward to it since the day it was announced. I hope the wait wont be too excruciating.
