This summer I put down some temporary roots. These roots started as packets of seeds, mostly vegetables. I have learnt how much work goes into producing food and, at the same time, have experienced a sense of wonder at the interaction of earth, air and water (and seed) which produces such miracles as peas, carrots, beetroots, and coriander.

The garden teaches patience, observation, tenderness, ruthlessness (weeds) and humility. It also teaches commitment, even if only for one short growing season.

Meanwhile, in parallel, I have been planting seeds for the next film. Impatience has often got the better of me, and despair that I would ever find my way again. But suddenly, a few days before leaving the garden (and the hut where I write) I found the first tender but sturdy little shoots of a new screenplay.
